Day 6 - July 8th

Heading to Homer to Halibut fish - say that 10 times fast!
OK, the weather up to this point has be BEAUTIFUL - this was one FREEZING cold picnic!

 Lizzie walking the beach
Donna walking the beach.. really walking on barnacled rocks, but beach, none the less - looking for the tide pools.
This is the beach we're launching off of... the tide is OUT right now and in the distance you can see a bot being hauled out of the water via tractor.  This is the most unique way to launch boats I have ever seen - they take BIG tractors and hook the boat trailers to it then haul you out to the water and back you in - everyone already on board of the boat - basically just back up and stop really fast and slide you out... getting back out is more of an adventure!
turning around at the waters edge
and we're in the water and on our way 28 miles towards the sea.
All the siblings on the same boat!
Mike and Linda hanging in the cabin to stay a little warmer.
that Log you see is an otter and it MAY have it's baby with it... there were "schools" - "pods" what are a group of otters called?  We zipped by what I thought was a log the first time it was so large and was informed NO that is an otter... no way!  So they zipped closer the next time just in time to see mom's head pop up and then baby's head pop up at her armpit like it was nursing then they both dove down and were gone - I would NEVER have pictured them so far out to sea (inlet).. but you get the drift - 200 foot of water and they're just floating along....
note lack of jacket on my part... I'm just in a thermal it was nice out there once we stopped motoring along it really did warm up a bit and the water was scary smooth!
Nope, not dragging in a gull!

That would be a skate twirling in the water being a bugger to drag up... halibut have the mouth in front so fly like a kite, skates are more like open umbrellas and that with a 5lb weight and 200' of line can wear a body out!

 Dad's HUGE Halibut catch!!
 counting heads in bloody water.
Dad doing his best to avoid the huge pile of fish at his feet - not working so well!
WHAT a HAUL!  Not too shabby.
Mr. Ling Cod does not think it's such a good haul!

The rest of the crew went to see what Homer had to offer...
 Overlooking the Spit
It's all fun and games until... well, someone gets poked in the nose?  Naw.. still fun and games
they look a bit chilly, don't you think?
And maybe a wee bit crabby?
