The last day and the last breakfast. They were so sweet - they made my breakfast early the first morning to accomodate my need to be at work earlier than their breakfast hours would accommodate. The orange juice was so fresh and SUPER pulpy so it was very tasty!
Final parting shot at one of the gates of the city.
My first choice was to drive out to see if I could get in to see the Villa la Rotonda.
Hours of operation indicated that it was open after 10am. I was driving there and missed my turn... but thanks to phone GPS it took me past it, I pulled out in a pull out and walked back to get these pictures... it's so pretty but the "walk" to the house is no longer a functional walk, the wall at the top is closed off and doesn't appear to have had any steps prior... so not sure what is up with that... maybe a false entry, or one that was active without steps? Who knows... it's weird.SO - when I passed by and went the "back way" and goodness knows it was truly a BACK way...
yeah, it looks like a bike path. So... I drove right past the entry... past a few cars parked on the side.. drove by it a few more times as well, drove in circles for a bit until I figured out that there was simply NO parking there... and I thought "screw it" and drove to the NEXT villa.
BUT I didn't stop here - they had parking and there was a trail between the two of them... I had been told by the concierge at the hotel that these two were an easy walk in addition to a basilica in the local area. I didn't have a copy of the name of the basilica, but I found this villa and it had parking. yay!! So I parked there and walked to the first one... thinking I could tour the inside. Uh, yeah. NO> I couldn't.
The first stop was the potty - ha! It was down stairs off of a parking area... yeah. go figure... it was locked but it was there :) hum... anyway the portico there was BEAUTIFUL
After discovering that I was unable to see INSIDE of the house, I went ahead and toured the gardens. What parts of the gardens I could get to anyway.. there really weren't that many ways to get around the house - it was limited. Oh, well. I walked around, tried to peer into windows and looked at the view and trying to figure out the floor plan - I had to look it up and would have NEVER guess what I did discover it was laid out like
who would have thunk, right?
The well was super cute but capped off.
I have to say the brick work under each of those porticos was impressive!!
Inside the door to the right - interesting. I think you can see all the way to the other side. I found out later there were tours of the kitchens as well, I wonder if they were under here?
The door to the left... I was wondering what was under there...
Looking back at the same passage.....
The window a little closer...
I stuck my phone up high and could get a picture inside... and NOTHING (well, besides the plant and a tiny door in there...)
Now the one to the right of the picture two above had THIS in there... just a storage area, but still fascinating to see the sharpening wheel int here among other odds and ends.
same porch - from above looking down towards the wooded area.
So the portico that I showed you first is actually under the building to the left in this picture. and this is back down to the street - when you exit this area (this is the entrance/exit) you would turn to the right, then left and up the hill...
It was a beautiful path....
Flowering trees and lots of lizards dashing into the weeds.
Cute private house to the left and the villa to the front... another private house to the right of this up and over the top of the hill.
Functioning water spout at the top of the hill love the detail work.
The flooring transition with the terrazzo flooring was really interesting.
Built in coat rack - pretty sure that is 70's tile insert, but maybe not... hard to tell.
sitting in the gardens and enjoying the day!
THIS well wasn't capped! Not sure how deep it was and as much as I was tempted to chuck something in to see, I didn't!
Weirdly not a functioning fountain, the iron you see is actually just a hook for plants.
beautiful flower beds with very colorful tulips.
The gardener in me spotted the dandelion weed and ALMOST pulled it...
Yep, I am my daddies daughter!!
The difference between the fathers house and the sons house was striking. The sons house had a lot of beautifully painted ceilings and the fresos had a much more "naturalist" feel to them.
And with that I had to get on the road and head to the airport to end my wonderful trip to Vicenza.
On the tarmac getting on my first leg ot the flight home. I didn't get seat assigned on either flight so was on standby. That was fine as I did make it on all the flights, but was bad because my luggage didn't make it. BOOOO. It was a German Holiday today so I had big fears that I wasn't going to get it until tomorrow but low and behold it showed up about 6pm. yay!! AND both bottles of wine were intact. double yay!!
