Day two

Sevilla spain waiting in the Lobby for Meagan to start our tour of town.
We moved to a hotel closer to the center of town for walking.  I say We, but it was me who moved.  Meagan came into town on Sunday where I came into town Saturday and the hotel I wanted to stay at didn't have availability on Saturday as well, so I stayed in the Hilton.  So - I moved.  it wasn't much difference in the drive out to the base in the morning for support work, so that was good.  And with longer days and Spanish dinners don't start until 8pm.  yep, kitchens don't open until 8 pm.  This is NOT great for folks who work military hours, but it IS good for sight seeing. :)

 Sunny hotel waiting room
huge doors... that are to a...
convent.  Yep, a convent in the middle of downtown Seville.  I wonder what is in there?  If there are pretty courtyards, etc..
another plaque on the other side of the convent... I haven't translated it, but for those that know Spanish you can check it out.

During our wanderings we stumbled acorss this chapel

The bad news is that after this chapel there was a bit of an upset with me and my constitution... and we had to take a drive via taxi back to the hotel so I could get supplies and clean up.  Sigh.  These bowels of mine.  UGH.  Oh, well, I went back to the hotel and did what needed to be done, then rested a minute and took a taxi RIGHT back out there!!

SUPER tempted to get this cute bull platner for the wall - talk about adorable!!!

Note the grass growing out of the roof tops?  You may think they are on rooftop patio's and such... they are not.  How do I know?  This:
I had two angels on these sunflowers... they are, indeed growing out of the tiles up there.  I'm surprised at just HOW much foliage is growing out of the buildings around here.  For those of us who know that root systems will break the concrete over time I question why they don't make more of an effort to maintain this and remove the growth.  It's weird.

Other sides of the chapel from prior.  It wasn't open by the time we got to that side of the building, dratit!
 Just a pretty view!

Plaza de España

I chuckle at the horse that is stretched through this and Meagans face shortened in this!  ha!
I can crop out the bottom part and have a great view of the whole Spanish Plaza....

 Selfies by the fountains.

Because sometimes you just have to echo what you see :D  hahahaha!
The tile work!!!  The ceilings with tile work... seriously!!!
Large establishing tile work that tells about the plaza

  Flamenco dancers!

Scroll down fast and you can see them in motion.  Life goals when I retire!  Learn to flamenco and join a troupe to perform in public :)

On the way back, we saw a LOT of cats in this large moat of a ditch... LOTs - like 20  These were the favorites as there were two kittens... and what is that black blog on the wall????

Yep, that was a black cat with all four paws hanging out the hole... just chillin... it was cleaning itself from time to time, but eventually just laid there and ignored the world :)  I took a video to send the girls, they wanted me to bring them all home.

THEN we walked by this hotel.  I want to stay here ONCE... it's beautiful!!

These hooded figures are EVERYWHERE.  They are

Capirote

History[edit]

Historically, the flagellants are the origin of the current traditions, as they flogged themselves to do penance. Pope Clement VI ordered that flagellants could perform penance only under control of the church; he decreed Inter sollicitudines ("inner concerns" for suppression).[2] This is considered one of the reasons why flagellants often hid their faces.
The use of the capirote or coroza was prescribed in Spain and Portugal by the holy office of Inquisition. Men and women who were arrested had to wear a paper capirote in public as sign of public humiliation. The capirote was worn during the session of an Auto-da-fé. The colour was different, conforming to the judgement of the office. People who were condemned to be executed wore a red coroza. Other punishments used different colours.
When the Inquisition was abolished, the symbol of punishment and penitence was kept in the Catholic brotherhood. However, the capirote used today is different: it is covered in fine fabric, as prescribed by the brotherhood. Later, during the celebration of the Holy Week/Easter in Andalusia, penitentes (people doing public penance for their sins) would walk through streets with the capirote.
The capirote is today the symbol of the Catholic penitent: only members of a confraternity of penance are allowed to wear them during solemn processions. Children can receive the capirote after their first holy communion, when they enter the brotherhood.

This chapel was closed, but one further down was open... it was a much poorer church as you will see from the photos.

That is the mesh to keep the birds and/or parts of the paint from coming down on parishioners?  Either way it's not sunbeams!

gotta love th HUGE doors with the smaller doors inset for humans to walk through.

AND since this is olive country, it was imperative to have olives this night for dinner... and they disappointed.  They were NOT what I thought they would be.  It didn't keep me from eating them (and didn't help that Meagan doesn't like them!) so I ate a few... because they were there... sad reason.  They weren't horrible, but they were not something I would order and pay for if I had to - these came with the table.

This is the ceiling IN the restaurant and it's not a fancy place, but that ceiling!!!

THIS is what was for dinner tonight.  This area is famous for their pork.  I got a kabob that was steaks and porks and delish!!!  The night prior was pork cheeks at a pub up the road from this one...also just as good!

Parting shot of the cathedral at city center - as we had to walk by here on the way to the hotel.
Miles walked 6.x  Gelato was justified going to AND from town LOL

ANNNDDD she's off again!

Leaving Stuttgart with rain and overcast.  Headed SOUTH... but first I have to fly north.  Lesson learned that I should NEVER fly through the UK.  They are not part of the Schengen agreement - aka you can't fly through the UK without passport control and passing through customs.. what a pain in the butt!!  However, I digress.

We had an hour layover in Stuttgart due to high winds in England. Hum...OK.  I napped.

 Into the clouds!!
SERIOUS clouds!  There were clouds above and below us for the first 1/2 hour or better of the flight.  Serious clouds.
Getting closer to the coast - somewhere over France or Brussels.... just flying blind.
 OH!  LOOK!!!  The coast!!!
BUT the clouds are starting up again.  Pretty soon it was to the point where I could not even see the water.  BUT I did see the northern coast for a few minutes.  No tulip fields from the sky.  That part was a bit disappointing.  I was hoping to see splashes of color, however with the clouds it was hard to see much of anything. :(

This is where the reference comes in to having to go through customs and go back through security.  That was weird... but OK, I went with it.  It wasn't too long of a wait to get in/out of that portion.

Heathrow had a Harry Potter store.  I almost got a letter for each of the girls while there... almost.
I had a good amount of a layover, so I opted to eat at Gordon Ramsey's Plane Food.  It was WELL worth the effort!!  This was my view, not the BEST, but not the worst either.
some sparkling water, because that is just what we do....(OK, just me... not Butch - he doesn't like sparkling water)
I opted for the Butter Chicken Curry - OMG, it was delish!!!
AND because we have so much time, I opted for dessert as well - that was a "tart" - it was a peanut butter based crust with chocolate topping and pistachio ice cream and raspberries... it was delish!!!

AND because I wasn't rushed the bill didn't come, then didn't come, then didn't come after I asked.  I had to ask twice.  By then I was running a little late - whoops!

I walked with purpose to the gate and they were already loading into the waiting area, but not loaded onto the busses yet... so I asked if I could go to the toilet really quick.  They said "yes, but make it quick"  So I did... and all was fine!
They weren't even loaded when I got back in there anyway :)  Yay me.  So, got there just in time and loaded in and off again!  This time to Madrid.
That octagon shaped item on the lower right of the screen is Windsor Palace.  Cool, eh?

I wish I could post video's on here as the flight in/out of there was super rough!
while flying to Madrid it was over the ocean again...

Spain was NOT what I pictured in Madrid.  It was very green there...
Fun ice crystals in the window while flying in.
If you can zoom in there are a lot of olive fields there... lots and lots of olive trees dot the tan areas.

Madrid was BACK through passport control, but this time I had an hour between flights.  Sounds like it would be ample doesn't it?  Well, it's NOT.  They take you to the main terminal via train - 1/2 hour, then you RUN through the terminal to get to the passport control, then security, then you notice on the boards stating that it's 1/2 hour to get to the K gates where you flight is departing from.  WHAT???  Yep, it was close.  I paused long enough for a few shots of the room and to show it was fairly empty in the airport, thank goodness!!

Hello Madrid, Goodbye Madrid.  I came to a screeching halt at the gate with about 10 people in front of me.  Seriously a close call.  I warned Meagan who would be taking that same connection the next day.  She didn't believe me until it came to be... ha! Then it was off to Sevilla Spain.  My first night was at a Hilton as I was there a day before our hotel we were staying in near downtown was available.  It was a very nice hotel, however, I see why it's not chosen as the place to stay for the whole TDY.  There is NOTHING around it and you would have to drive into town to get anything to eat.

I took the day to lay in the sun a bit and enjoy a down day before  starting the work week on Monday.

It was a nice relaxing time.

And that my dear friends was my fist night in Sevilla.  I don't even think I had dinner as I had the HUGE lunch at Gordon Ramsey's.  I think I just had the last bit of the snacks that I had from the plane and called it a day... napped, ate a good breakfast and enjoyed the day.
