Day 10

Really it’s day 11 if we count day 1 as travel day. Because that’s what today was as well. 

Look at the turret at the bottom of the hill on the left!  Pretty!

BEAUTIFUL architecture in most towns

Not sure where my commentary went on all the pictures - I was admiring these houses along the way then remembered I should take a picture and share them. They carve reliefs in the stucco and color them a bit so you can see them - lots of fun outdoor scenes on the houses - glad I was able to capture at least one!

The fun thing about driving in Germany is there are castles on quite a few hills!  Lots and lots of castle ruins and some occupied ones as well.  We can't find this one on the maps so we think it may be a replica instead!

Day 9

Welcome to Wartburg Castle. 

Our arrival was “challenging “ as it was unclear where to park and how to get up to the castle. Yeah. That was fun driving yo the narrow roadway and finding you were where you were NOT meant to be. The shuttle drive up there but that road was not for us!  Ha!  Imagine everyone’s shock when we drove up into the castle grounds. Hahahaha!  Stupid Americans!  So back down the narrow roadway back to the parking area and out where your husband INSISTS you schlep your bags to the castle up a hill. Oh HELL NO. I’m paying $300 a night for a friggin room. Cart my stuff up the hill folks. We watched a shuttle drive down and up the hill again without stopping. Then finally one stopped and picked us up. 

Lordie. 

We ended up in room 305. Front and center in the place. Third floor overlooking the castle.

Our room is the three small windows at the top. Well our sitting room is there. :) love it!!

The grounds to the castle are great!  Wandering the grounds and seeing all we can do. 

So we took the tour as it was self guided. And we weren’t supposed to take pictures but of course when you are not being guided you will take pictures...but only a few.

Short people lived in the day. Not as much nutrition available. But there are nitches for the heads. 

And with that we outside waiting for sunset. 

We did wander the grounds some more

Butch was determined to get a pretty picture of the sunset. You can see that the place is getting empty. 

A very empty castle is sort of fun!

Dinner. The meal for me was a “deer, but not a deer.” Hahaha. Not sure what the meat was but it was delicious. It came with a dumpling of some sort of a pecan Crust (I think) and some red cabbage. Butch had a steak with mashed potatoes and he said his was just as good. There was also a rhubarb something that had sprouts. It was different and interesting.. 

on and a warm chocolate cake with ice cream and cherry. It was so amazing that we didn’t even get a picture of it!!  Ha!!
