Fort Walton Beach

The trip to FWB was a bit different this time as we had gotten word that Sally had gone into the hospital before we flew out of Germany.  She had a sinus infection that knocked her for a loop.  She was thinking she had pneumonia however that didn't turn out to be the case.  She was simply sick and hadn't been taking care of herself because she was sick and it snowballed.  So, we were on a vigil at Don's house to see if we would need to bump up our timeline to head to FWB for assistance.  She remained in the hospital for our visit, however did get transferred to rehab to get her strength back so that she would be able to care for herself once she was able to go home.

While in town I got to see Jennie my girlfriend from college - it was sooo good to get together with her and laugh and have a good time.  We went to the beach to have some lunch and talk!

The little house is looking a little worse for wear as of late.  I took this picture in preparation for PAINT!!!  Yes, we are finally getting her facia repaired and paint done on the old girl. 

HERE are the paint colors I chose.  The DEEP Juniper berry for the brick paint and the Frost for the body of the house with stark white for trim, doors and for the shutters.  There won't be a lot of difference in color between the body and the shutters, but hopefully you'll be able to tell.  If not, no biggie.  it's not like there is a lot of difference now in colors on the top, right?  It's white on white on the house now with red brick.  It will be interesting to see it all painted up!

For those NOT in the loop Butch is boat obsessed and America's Great Loop obsessed.  So we are looking at boats.  We went to the marina in FWB however they do NOT have any larger boats.  They pointed us to the one in Pensacola, so we dutifully went there to see boats - only to be greeted with boat - singular.  AND not the boat we would want as she's not a trawler, she's a party boat.  NOT what we want.  We want a boat which can go on open seas AND be a like a house boat that can travel well in said open seas.

He does look at home on this boat, but sadly it's not the boat for us.

I spent a lot of my time between (and IN) rain storms chinking the back windows because that stuff is just falling out left and right... we need new windows on that place but we'll do that AFTER the paint job is done..

Sally did make it to rehab the last few days we were there, we were able to get her settled in and bring her items to the place before we left and one day when Butch was dropping stuff off and talking to his mom I made friends with the local cat they had there at the place.  He's a trap, neuter, return cat as he has his ear clipped, but he's SO friendly.  He had a little house, food and water bowl in the gazebo there as well, so he may be a feral, but he's a well cared for faral cat.

Butch gave me such flack because I MISS jets... I have spent 25 years near jets and Air Force.  Being on an Army base is weird to me as there are NO jets... so I have to tourist and take pictures of jets when they go by!  LOVE jets!!

I took quite a few pictures at the airport when we were leaving for the next leg of our trip to Vegas to meet up with the girls.

BUT the leg from ATL to Vegas we were in FIRST class - lucky us!!

I could almost lay flat but being of larger size it's NOT comfortable for me as my shoulders are crammed in there and I feel like my feet are touching the end... which they were - add to that flip flops and I was leery to lay all the way down.  I did get to the 80% reclined and just pulled my knees up to be a bit more comfortable... so it was nice!

And just like that we're in Vegas.... I'm amazed at what folks will WEAR on planes now.... they are skanky.  There was a gal in the ATL airport in pajamas, fuzzy slippers and a robe for crying out loud.  I mean, really???  NO!  Just NO!!!  This gal was at least in a jogging suit BUT the fuzzy slippers do me in... what ARE people thinking?

the one and only picture we took the whole four days we were in DC.  Why?  We were busy talking and visiting and relaxing!

The fun fact is that R&D were in the process of packing their house to move to South Carolina. They were a bit leery to tell us that they were moving as they didn't want to scare us off from the visit!  We would have visited regardless.... but maybe gotten out of their hair a bit by staying at a hotel if needed.  

It was such a fun time catching up and visiting with them!

... and so the travel begins

 I told NO one I was traveling, so if you didn't hear from me it's because we had such limited time.  If you see my schedule you WILL question this as we had a few days at each spot, but if you lived in my shoes, you will discover this was not NEARLY enough

The flight to the states I paid for the upgrade to comfort.  It was nice to have the extra leg room on the trip.  The plane was EMPTY.  Comfort had Butch, Me and ONE other soul on board.  It was nice, but really not necessary on the daylight flight... but I digress

We had to do the OJ Simpson run through the airport as they changed the gate for our next leg of the trip.  I had stopped to buy a few things on the way to the gate... the gate was empty when we showed up and Butch didn't read the gate that stated it was moved... which isn't horrible, but it was from one gate series to another...as in Fxx to Exx - and for those who have been to Schiphol Airport is a LARGE distance.  UGH.  I do NOT run through airports, and Butch walks fast... I told him to go FAST and tell them to wait for me!  It was awful and we truly didn't have to rush were I looking at my dang phone or checking the gates.  ugh.  lesson learned.  it was a tight connection regardless.

Pretty landscapes flying into Amsterdam, however most flowers have been beheaded to allow the bulbs to grow bigger and healthier for sale and dividing 

This is the overseas flight and we're in the comfort rows... note that there is really NO ONE up with us... you'll note in the picture below that just past Butch there is ONE other person up there who's in comfort with us!

I did want to note how BIG the windows were and the fact I was excited that they were electronically controlled for dimming.  There was no shade, it was all dependant on pushing the "up" or "down" window to dim or brighten the window.  I'm excited by the technology :)

Until most of the clouds were covering the whole of England.  I don't think that the clouds eased until we were well into Ireland.

Our first stop was Washington to see Robin and Donald for a few days.

What I didn't mention was getting out... the debates on what tests were required, what was needed etc..  To leave we had to go to Tubingen to get PCR tests 72 hours prior to the flight and antigen tests at the airport to ensure we could pass through the Netherlands without issues.  They didn't ask for the antigen test, but they did ask for the PCR test to get on the flights.  You'll see why I mention this on the way home...

Travel is painful during Covid

So we have plans to travel in the future. You would think this is easy...nope. You have to have a Covid test. Not only that but a specific PCR test. It’s a three day prior to travel test. They’re not cheap. Then are €130 in Boblingen. They are €60 in Tubingen.  Guess we’re driving to Tubingen. 

Then as planning progresses we find we NOW have to have an antigen test to fly through Amsterdam. It’s has to be 4 hours prior to the flight. Sooooo can we take this test in Stuttgart?  Unknowns. We will have to call and find out....and by we, i mean me. 

We could go out if Frankfurt but there are NO flights from stuttgart TO Frankfurt. So we either drive up and pay for Parking OR we take the train. All re added expenses not planned for. 

Sigh. Soooo we find ways around it all. Flying is no fun anymore. AT ALL. It stresses me out!!

The painting...

 Yes, there is a tale of the painting.. I fell in love with it while looking at the website for this store... it's a junk store with lots of fun stuff in there... most of it is at retail prices, so it's hard to judge if you really should buy it or not, so you better LOVE it before you buy it.  Ya know?  So... I fell in love with this painting when I first saw it here:

It was not the featured item in the shot, but I spied it in the back... along with the one of the far right... but after looking at the far right I have something similar to that already in prints in my office now... that are along that same theme.  So, I sort of already had it in my mind that I wanted that painting AND a wash stand.

And so, it came home with me... 

BUT as I was taking it out I noted a bad repair on the back where the actual repair was peeling off.  In fact there were TWO repairs to this canvas

I didn't take pictures because I was ILL about it... really - to have bought it and not looked closely enough at it... then I had to sit myself down and tell myself that it was really a painting you LIKED... which is rare... and one that you really didn't pay all that much for... and you KNEW it had issues with the frame... so let's just see what we have to do to repair the actual painting too... because you KNOW this happens, you have watched a few documentaries on painting repairs... so, let's just try this!

First repair didn't go so well, we tried it IN the frame... yeah... no... the white repair at the bottom of that black one is one of the original repairs... it was still holding and looked good

I probably put too large a piece of canvas on there as well and discovered I should have used untreated canvas, not one cut off a literal canvas from the craft store.  Ooops.  but I did use Gesso to do the repair and glue it all together...

The result was a bit of a hot mess and a notable white "ring" inside of the repair where the gesso had soaked into the fibers.  Well, crap... and it was a bit bowed around the repair, which you can't see....

So, take #2.  remove the painting from the frame... and put it on a flat surface - the carpet is a sturdy carpet and there is something between the painting surface and the carpet to keep everything in order.

AND we weighted it and wet the canvas first to get it to dry more taunt in the frame...   It worked like a CHARM!  Flat surface to work with... now to get that color adjusted in the patching.

My repair... I should be ashamed of myself for getting so much gesso onto the front of the painting... but hey, you live and learn, don't you?  yep!  you can see the other repair in the lower right of this shot as well...

AND THE REVEAL!!!  

It's a tad noticeable up close... like REALLY close... there is a bit more bright green in there where it should be more muted...but honestly if I wasn't pointing it out, I'm not sure anyone would notice...

I even dabbed on a bit of darker paint where you could see some canvas on the other repair..

AND from a distance I don't think anyone will be the wiser, do you????

Part of our Christmas package from the neighbor at Christmas included some New Years good luck marzipan pigs.  They were sure cute, tasted HORRID, but cute!!  ha!

Random sunset pictures... it was so pretty and this may have been when we had a bit of the Saharan desert in the air here... that was fun... the clouds during mid day reminded me of tornado clouds...yellow tinge.. but I'll be darned if I could get a good picture of it!

 My plants at work... that green potted one on the left reaches all the way to the window :)  LOVE my plants.  The BIG peace lily under the SUU flag is something like 15 years or 16 years old now.. she is HUGE!!!  the ones on the table to the right are now back in my window now that they won't get frostbite sitting up there :)

These photos are so out of order... but this is outside of the antique store that I finally got to go to recently... Antikissimo... it's more of a junk store, but fun... I bought this painting...

AND noted the hole in it that had a very poor mend to it... so I went on a tangent looking for how to fix it properly...  The frame spoke to me, the painting itself spoke to me... so I had to have it.  hole and all... although stupid me, if I had seen the horrible patch I would have negotiated more on it.

This was the other purchase - a very antiqued wash stand with a blue bowl.  I do like it... it is now holding my plant on the third floor... and I have trimmed this plant a bit more too... there are no longer tendrils going down to the 2nd floor.

Here is the painting out of the light... it's pretty "dark" because it is a stormy day... but really, i like it... I mended the lower left corner of the frame where a few pieces came off and fixed some loose areas as well... I had all the pieces, just needed to glue them.

So, it's still a work in progress, but it's getting there...and regretfully the hole you CANT see here.. is more noticeable after the mend... but I now I have some oils to really resolve the issues that are there... I'll see if I can find a more recent picture of the poor hole...

Flowers I purchased at Real a few weeks ago and plopped in the ground. they are quite happy!

Easter Eggs I ordered and received from a gal on line as they don't have Markets this year - thanks COVID!

AND I went to Lisa's antiques and collectables as well this year...

I finally went and found this cute card press - Butch thinks it's a reproduction... I don't care, I love it.  I think I want to use it as a flower press for smaller flowers.

My Easter "tree" with a few of my eggs up there...

Plans to use this for Christmas... they are wooden strap on skates.  These will go on the sled for my porch for decorations.

Updates in restrictions

 Well Feb came and went without an ease in restrictions. It’s now March 1. We are extended to March 28th. Do you see a trend here?  My first typing was 38th. Which sadly seems appropriate. What is open now?

All places require KN95 (medical grade) masks. I bought a 50 pack recently as they are disposable.
